This Fall, Hyde Park's Newest Places to Eat Are Behind University and Obama Center Doors

October 15, 2026

Between late August and the end of September, three new food counters opened in Hyde Park, and the Obama Presidential Center's restaurant was already serving a few blocks south. All four sit inside institutional buildings. The University of Chicago and the Obama Foundation could bring in chefs and open quickly because the kitchens, permits and foot traffic were already there. The two independent projects on the neighborhood's commercial streets are still behind construction fencing. Sanders BBQ Prime is on Lake Park Avenue and Night Heron Wine Bar is at 55th and Cornell. Both are in older buildings, and both have opening dates that have moved.

For anyone looking for a new lunch spot this month, the closest ones are in buildings that are easy to walk past.

The Fall Openings, in Order

UChicago Dining announced four new options for Autumn Quarter. Three now have firm dates.

  1. August 24: Little Betty Smokehouse soft-opens in Hutchinson Commons, 1133 E. 57th St.
  2. September 22: The Hunt opens at the Logan Center, 915 E. 60th St., replacing Café Logan.
  3. September 28: Little Betty holds its official grand opening, and Kabob-It Express opens at Midway Cafe.
  4. Date TBA: the Bahama Shack food truck, run by Bahamian-born chef Courtney Neil, has been announced but has no start date.

Kabob-It Express is chef Maisha Oliver's third location in the city and her second on campus. The menu is chicken, salmon and vegetable kabobs, and the proteins are halal.

Little Betty Brings a Citywide Name to 57th Street

Dominique Leach, founder of Lexington Betty Smokehouse, named that restaurant for her grandmother, Betty King of Lexington, Mississippi. Little Betty Smokehouse is her new concept inside Hutchinson Commons. UChicago Dining's announcement says it serves the university community and "Chicago diners" too. Eater Chicago's September openings roundup lists it as open to the public. Items named there include the wagyu dog, brisket baked beans, loaded mac and cheese, Betty Beef and the Betty Taco. WTTW also included it in its September 21 roundup of fall openings.

Little Betty is the only one of the fall openings without published hours or prices. The UChicago Dining page for Hutchinson Commons describes it as Chicago-style barbecue with smoked meats, signature sandwiches and sides. Check that page before you walk over.

That makes two barbecue openings on the same side of Hyde Park in the same season. The second one is the subject of the street-front section below.

The Hunt Is Built for Lingering

The Logan Center redid its café over the summer with Chef Lizz Wright and designer Monica Haslip. They based it on Carver 47, their café at Little Black Pearl in Bronzeville. The new name honors the Chicago sculptor Richard Hunt.

Of the four, this one is the easiest to use without a university connection. The Logan Center's visitor page says its public spaces are open to everyone during regular hours, and it specifically mentions meeting friends at The Hunt. It lists these hours:

  • Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sunday, closed

UChicago Dining's page, still labeled Café Logan, shows different weekend hours. Confirm before planning a Saturday or Sunday visit.

On The Hunt's online menu, a chicken salad wrap is $8.50, a smoked turkey cheddar club is $9.50 and a grilled cheese is $10. The two headline plates are The Woodlawn at $16 and a BBQ Jerk Salmon Burger at $17. A free jazz quartet plays there on Saturday, October 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. RSVP is encouraged but not required. That's two hours past the café's posted Saturday closing time, so The Hunt is also being used as an evening event space.

Tafari's Kitchen Has Been Open Since June

The Obama Presidential Center opened to the public on June 19, 2026. Most of the campus is free and doesn't require a ticket. Only the Museum uses timed-entry tickets. You can eat at Tafari's Kitchen without a Museum ticket. It's in the Forum at 6011 S. Stony Island Ave., with counter ordering and first-come seating.

The schedule is unusual. The Obama Foundation lists Monday hours of 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. From Tuesday through Sunday it closes at 5 p.m. That makes Monday the only night it serves dinner. The Foundation also mentions a café for snacks, but its current hours weren't confirmed for this post.

Why the Street-Front Projects Take Longer

The institutional openings went fast because the hard part was already done. Hutchinson Commons, the Logan Center and the Forum were built, licensed and staffed for food service before any of these chefs arrived. An independent owner taking over an old storefront handles zoning, permits and construction alone, and old buildings often have surprises inside the walls.

Night Heron Wine Bar shows how that plays out. Steven Lucy owns 57th Street Wines and Open Produce and is part-owner of Cornell Florist. He's converting the former BMO Harris Bank branch at 5493 S. Cornell Ave., which closed in November 2024. The Hyde Park Herald reported the sequence: first a rezoning, then a building permit, then construction. Work in the 111-year-old building ran into problems.

"Pillars and pipes are really hard to move because they run up to the apartments upstairs." Steven Lucy, speaking to the Hyde Park Herald

The target date has moved more than once. Block Club Chicago reported in April 2025 that Lucy was aiming for an October or November 2025 grand opening. The Herald later reported he hoped to open in the spring. WTTW's September 21, 2026 roundup said fall, with small-winery and natural wines, beer, cocktails and snacks. As of mid-October, the bar's own site still says "Opening in 2026" and gives no date.

Sanders BBQ Prime Is Taking On a Bigger Room

Sanders BBQ Prime is going into 5311 S. Lake Park Ave. W., the former home of The Promontory. That venue held its last event, a New Year's Eve 2025 party, and closed. James Sanders and his business partner, Ogbonna Bowden, aren't copying the counter-service setup at Sanders BBQ Supply Co. in Beverly. According to Block Club Chicago's September 29 report, the Hyde Park space will be a 130-seat sit-down restaurant with a large bar and an open kitchen. New items include steak, lamb chops, prawns and a 20-ounce pork steak that is cold-smoked for four hours and then grilled in front of diners. Bowden is building the drinks program with a mixologist. It will include a take on the Bloody Mary, mocktails, wines, whiskeys and beer.

This timeline has also moved. In September 2025, a UChicago community post passed along a projection that the restaurant would open in about six months. A year later, Block Club photographed the space under construction on September 28, 2026, and the target was the end of the year. Sanders told Block Club he wants the restaurant to become a neighborhood gathering spot first. "Hopefully, Hyde Park accepts us like Beverly did," he said.

One Independent Already Finished Its Renovation

TrueNorth Café shows how it looks when an independent project gets through construction. Owner Andy Peters reopened the café at 1323 E. 57th St. on May 9 after six months of renovations. It serves sandwiches, panini, coffee, smoothies and lemonades, and the renovation added a direct path from inside to the patio. Six months is a short timeline next to the year-plus waits at 55th and Cornell and on Lake Park Avenue. That's the gap between updating a space that's already a café and converting a bank or a music venue into something new.

So the fall map looks like this. For a weekday lunch, there's Little Betty and Kabob-It Express on 57th Street, The Hunt on 60th, and Tafari's Kitchen on Stony Island. For a sit-down barbecue dinner or a natural-wine bar close to home, the dates to watch are year-end on Lake Park Avenue and the still-unannounced opening at 55th and Cornell.

Converting old Hyde Park buildings involves rezoning, permits, and pipes that run up into the apartments above. Taylor Dixon Group works on that kind of renovation and mixed-use property every day.
